Thornton Dexter - Info
The first product released in the Thornton Amplifier range is the Dexter 20 Watt Push-Pull Pentode guitar amplifier.
In brief, Dexter is an all thermionic valve (tube) signal path guitar amplifier, available as a head or a combination amplifier/loudspeaker. Also available is the 'Fastback 212' loudspeaker cabinet, housing 2 of our no-compromise custom 12" drivers, with the option of mixing Alnico and Ceramic drivers, all in a quickly convertible premium quality cabinet.
The Dexter amplifier offers 2 switchable channels and 2 alternative channel modes, each channel has independant volume and 2 band tone controls. Channel A is primarily a 'clean' channel; it will maintain minimal distortion with increasing gain, to the point where the power amplifier stage is overdriven. It has substantial gain available, allowing high levels of power amplifier distortion.
Channel B has a 'Master Volume' so the preamplifier can be easily overdriven and used at low volume levels. Even more substantial gain is available than with Channel A, allowing significant power amplifier overdriving and the ability to blend preamplifier and power amplifier distortion characteristics.
Then, for even greater tonal sculpting, the Dexter amplifier has 'Schizoid' and 'Psycho' modes. Schizoid mode reconfigures the amplifier so that Channel A drives the input of Channel B. This allows tonal shaping both before and after the preamp overdrive valve circuits. Psycho mode again reconfigures the channels so that they are used in parallel, offering any combination of both channels.
The power amplifier stage has our exclusively developed 'Voicing' control which affects the tonal characteristics of the power amplifier stage independantly from the channel tone circuits. Also, a low power mode down-rates the power amplifier to 5 Watts and reconfigures the valve topology to Triode Mode for different power stage characteristics.
